The territory of Bosnia & Hercegovina was inhabited by a specific mix of nationalities: people from Italy, Spain, Syria, Egypt and even Palestine lived there. During the period from 1180 till 1463 Bosnia & Hercegovina played an important role among other states in the Western Balkans. Then Bosnia became a Turkish province with its capital in Sarajevo. The Turkish rule over Bosnia & Hercegovina within the Ottoman Empire lasted for 400 years. By 1878 Austria-Hungary occupied the territory. After WWI Bosnia & Hercegovina was inserted into the Serb-dominated Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, which was renamed Yugoslavia in 1929. So, formerly the country was one of the six republics, constituting the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Later Bosnia & Hercegovina got the status of republic. In 1992, it became independent. According to the Dayton Agreement, after the war the Federation of Bosnia & Hercegovina should administer 51% of the country, while the Serb Republic - the other 49%. Though the after-war tension is still present, the shpere of country’s tourism has been constantly developing.
